KEMRI’s Strategic Visit to AMPATH to Enhance Grants Management.

In a bid to streamline and enhance the Institute’s grants management system, the Institute’s leadership made a benchmarking visit to the Eldoret-based Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) this week.

The KEMRI delegation led by the Chairman, Board of Directors Dr. Abdullahi Ali, Board Directors, Ms. Faith Mwongerah, Mr. Luka Chemwolo and Ag. Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok, had a strategic engagement with AMPATH Executive Director and Chief of Party, Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo and top leadership of AMPATH with an objective of building and growing the institutes grants management system.

Dr. Abdullahi was accompanied by among others; Ag. Director Scientific Programs, Partnerships and Grants Management, Dr. Maricianah Onono, Deputy Director Human Resource Management, Mr. Ben Sifuna, Deputy Director Supply Chain and management, Mr. Kalu Kitaba, Deputy Director ICT, Mr. Mahsen Abud, Ag. Director Legal Services and Corporation Secretary, Ms. Margaret Rigoro and Ag. Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Gabriel Kamau, and Ms. Jean Chepngetich from the Grants Office.

The 3 day visit which commenced on Monday, 29th, July 2024 will seek to gain valuable insights on how AMPATH, which is a consortium of local and international academic Institutions, can support KEMRI’s Grants Management system.

The Team made several presentations on the overview of KEMRI, highlighting the current grants management system, the challenges faced, and the aspirations for improvement through this visit.

“Our goal is to streamline our grants management processes and adopt best practices to enhance efficiency and compliance,” said Dr. Abdullahi.

“We aim to make KEMRI a central grant coordinator for major regional grants and position ourselves to be self-sustaining in the next three to four years,” Prof. Songok noted.

The delegation engaged in various sessions throughout the visit, discussing key success factors in grant management, fundraising strategies, compliance, and monitoring systems. They also explored how to leverage technology for end-to-end automation in grants management, drawing insights from AMPATH’s established practices.

The event will conclude with a strategic planning session aimed at identifying gaps and opportunities for KEMRI by comparing their practices with those of AMPATH. The session will be followed by closing remarks from both KEMRI and AMPATH executives, and a networking session to foster future collaborations. This visit marks a crucial step for KEMRI in its quest to enhance its grants management system and position itself as a leader in regional grant coordination.
