Board’s Review of Institute’s Current & Future Research Achievements.

This week, the KEMRI Board of Directors, led by Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ali, convened for an in-depth review of the Institute’s ongoing research projects, recent accomplishments, and future strategic plans across various KEMRI centers.

Present at the meeting were Board members Dr. Damaris Maweu, Mr. Luka Chemwolo, Ms. Faith Mwongerah and Ms. Vivian Chebii representing PS Treasury, a position held formerly by Mrs. Veronicah Okoth. Centre Directors and Deputy Directors delivered comprehensive presentations on the Institute’s research initiatives, highlighting significant progress made over the past year. The discussions focused on innovative strategies for advancing human health, with an emphasis on improving quality of life through research, capacity building, and service delivery.

Heads of the scientific and research leadership headed by Ag. Director of Research & Development Prof. Nelly Mugo, Ag. Director (SPPGM) and Ag. Director, (RCB), represented by Dr. Damaris Matoke-Muhia and Dr. Elizabeth Matei respectively made presentations that brought the members of the KEMRI Board of Directors to speed with some of the recent research developments. Other presentations were also received from Dr. Doris Njomo (DD, ESACIPAC), Dr. Ruth Nyangacha, (DD, CTMDR), Dr. Luna Kamau (DD,CBRD), Dr. Samuel Khamadi (DD, CVR), Dr. Samson Muuo (DD, L S), Dr. Zipporah Bukania (DD, CPHR), and Dr. Christine Bii (DD, CMR), Dr. Bernhards Ogutu and Mr. Fred Orina representing DDCCR and DDCRDR respectively.

“I am pleased with the steady progress and notable achievements in our ongoing research efforts,” stated Dr. Abdullahi Ali, KEMRI Board Chairman. “However, I encourage all Centre Directors to critically evaluate and enhance their research outputs and now in addition focus on commercialization for sustainability. I am confident that KEMRI will maintain its trajectory towards becoming a leading institution in medical research and health innovation.”

The meeting also featured a Peer Review Report presented by Professor John Odhiambo, a respected Professor of Mathematical Statistics and former ViceChancellor of Strathmore University. Prof. Odhiambo took the board through the detailed report of the recent Peer Review exercise highlighting key opportunities and areas of improvement that if implemented will enhance the Institute’s standing as a premier health institution it is not only in Africa but globally.

“Enhancing outreach and communication efforts will help elevate the Institute’s profile, while fostering a culture of innovation and reinforcing governance structures are crucial for sustained progress. These combined efforts will position KEMRI to effectively address emerging health challenges and lead in advancing medical science,” said Prof. Odhiambo.
