Preparations For The 3rd Annual Health & Climate Change Conference.

Preparations are in full swing for the 3rd Climate Change and Health Conference, which is being jointly organized by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the Ministry of Health, and the Machakos County Government and other partners. This conference which is scheduled on 15th to 18th October 2024, aims to bridge the gap between research, policy, and implementation in the context of climate action and universal health coverage. The conference will bring together experts and policy makers to create innovative solutions on health issues as well as building climate resilience among the people.

On 23rd August 2024, The KEMRI Centre for Public Health Research team and the ministry of health in collaboration with Mama doing good and Stockholm environment held a consultative meeting with the Machakos county government at the Deputy Governor office Hon. Francis Mwangangi. The meeting was in a purpose for the preparation of the 3rd health and climate change scientific conference scheduled for October in Machakos. The key objectives of the event were to affirm Machakos county government commitment as the designated county to host the 3rd health and climate change conference, approve the program for the conference and assess the venue for the event.

On behalf of the Governor Machakos County, The Deputy governor Francis Mwangangi warmly welcomed the delegation to the meeting, “Thank you all for visiting and choosing us as the host for this important event. We are deeply committed to supporting your efforts and ensuring that this gathering is a success. Addressing health and climate change is crucial, and we recognize the significance of tackling these issues both locally and nationally. Rest assured, we will provide every support needed to make this event impactful and productive.” Hon Francis Mwangangi Stated.

A team conducted an in-depth tour of the Machakos Convention Centre, the venue for the actual health and climate change conference. During the tour the team was able to evaluate the suitability of the convention Centre for hosting this significant event. The team meticulously inspected the facilities, focusing on aspects such as seating capacity, audiovisual equipment, breakout rooms, and accessibility features. The goal for this was to ensure that the venue could accommodate the expected number of attendees and provide a conducive environment for productive discussions. In addition to assessing the physical infrastructure, the team also reviewed logistical arrangements, including security protocols, accommodation for delegates, and transportation options.

Prof Nelly Mugo who represented the Director General KEMRI Prof. Elijah Songok, discussed collaborative efforts between KEMRI and the Machakos County government to ensure the success of the conference. Prof. Mugo praised the county’s proactive engagement and commitment, stating, “I am truly impressed by Machakos County’s enthusiasm and dedication. This level of support is essential for the success of our upcoming conference and will undoubtedly contribute to advancing our scientific research initiatives. I look forward to a fruitful collaboration that not only ensures the conference achieves its objectives but also fosters ongoing progress in our future research endeavors.”

The event concluded with a strategic planning session and approval of the program for the conference, Hon. Francis Mwangangi extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to the team. “I acknowledge the significant contributions of each and every one of you. The county remains fully committed to supporting both ongoing and future projects, and your collective impact is vital in advancing our shared goals.”
