KEMRI Offers Free DNA Testing to Identify Hillside Fire Victims.

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has deployed a specialized team to the tragic scene of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire in Nyeri to assist in the identification of the victims. The devastating fire claimed the lives of several children, and KEMRI’s Human DNA Identification (HID) Laboratory has been tasked with conducting DNA testing to help families identify their loved ones.

The KEMRI team, in collaboration with a multi-agency government task force, including the Government Chemist, has begun collecting and processing DNA samples. This crucial effort aims to expedite the identification process and provide closure to the grieving families.

Dr. Abdulahi Ali, Chairman of the KEMRI Board of Directors, confirmed that the Institute will cover the cost of the DNA testing services for the affected families. “We deeply empathize with the parents during this heartbreaking time. KEMRI is committed to doing everything in its power to support the families and help them find closure,” said Dr. Abdulahi.

The team is set to receive additional tissue samples from the victims on Wednesday, 11th September 2024, following autopsies led by the Chief Government Pathologist.

KEMRI’s HID Laboratory is renowned for its expertise in DNA testing across the region, providing services such as paternity and family relationship testing for both private individuals and legal cases. The laboratory has previously offered DNA testing support during national and regional disasters, solidifying its role as a leader in forensic identification services.
