KEMRI Enhances Global Health Collaboration with Centre for Vaccine Development.

The Institute has taken a pivotal step in strengthening its global health partnerships by hosting a high-level delegation from the Centre for Vaccine Development (CVD).

The courtesy call, led by CVD Director Prof. Samba Sow, was received by KEMRI’s Ag. Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok, at the Institute’s headquarters.

The meeting focused on expanding existing collaborations between KEMRI and CVD, particularly in vaccine research, health infrastructure development, and innovative solutions to tackle public health challenges. Both parties discussed ways to build upon their joint efforts to improve health outcomes, not only in Africa but on a global scale.

A central theme of the discussions was the importance of Pan-Africanism in health research. Prof. Sow emphasized the need for Africa to lead its own health initiatives, stating, “For Africa to achieve true health independence, we must champion homegrown solutions and foster collaborations that put African expertise and innovation at the forefront of global health efforts”.

Prof. Songok echoed this sentiment, highlighting that collaboration under the banner of Pan-Africanism is critical to overcoming the continent’s most pressing health issues. “By embracing the spirit of Pan-Africanism, we not only strengthen our partnerships but also create a unified front to tackle some of the continent’s most pressing health challenges. Together, we can accelerate progress in research, innovation, and public health solutions for all Africans,” said Prof. Songok.

The meeting signifies a substantial move forward in global health research and innovation, with both institutions committed to leveraging their expertise to advance vaccine development and improve health outcomes across Africa and beyond.

Prof. Sow was accompanied by Director of Research, Dr. Fadima Haidara, and Director of Finance & Administration, Dr. Collins Okello. The KEMRI delegation included Dr. Rose Bosire, representing the Acting Director of Strategy, Partnerships, Policy & Global Management, research scientists, Prof. Richard Omore, Dr. Ernest Wandera, Dr. James Kimotho, and Ms. Joan Lelei from the Finance Department.

This collaboration is expected to pave the way for new, transformative health solutions that will benefit communities across the continent.
